I think soon. Some have turned orange, so I'm thinking in a week or so they might be fully ripe. The purple ones have stayed half purple/half green, and half my plant is now growing what look like smallish jalapeños. unless these are tasty, they won't be on my grow list for next year.

Speaking of ghost peppers, I finally sampled the 7-pot jonah I am growing, and it IS hotter than the ghost peppers I have grown. My friend - the only one that will sample these kind of peppers - and I sampled one that was about half the size of the ghosts we tried, and I could only chew it for 27 sec., and he spit it out after 10 sec., while we could chew the ghosts well over 30 sec. Imprecise science, for sure, but it was definitely hotter!

Ok. Here's a picture of the chilis that have come off my plant. I haven't tried one yet.

Here's the actual plant. It looks like 2 different types of plant but both seem connected at the bottom stalk.

Wait, those all came off the same plant?

Maybe somebody grafted a plant, like they do to get a lemon, orange, and lime on the same tree! That larger pepper is the only one that looks somewhat like a ghost pepper, but the plant doesn't look anything like it. Still, there's only one way to find out if it's a "superhot", and that is to try it! Here's the peppers from that one 7-pot Jonah plant, in the Earthbox. They definitely look like Bhut Jolokias, but a little smaller. Probably as much capsaicin on this plate as in the rest of my garden!

Wait, those all came off the same plant? Yeah, weird eh? The part with the largest chilies is at the back and is about 6-8 inches taller than the rest of the plant. I've been too wimpy to try them yet. I'll have to get a big glass of milk and try to be brave.

Ok, I have done a taste test, and unless I happen to have a mouth of steel, these are not ghost chilies. The larger one is quite mild. Maybe like a Fresno. The smaller red one has a kick, probably closest to a birds eye chili. I cut the tips off each of them and started by touching the cut end to my tongue, and when I realized I wasn't going to die I ate a small piece of each. So I guess salsa might be an option.

That's my guess. I'm just glad I can use them. My tomatoes otoh, are not super tasty. They have less taste than off season supermarket Roma tomatoes which is a shame considering that they got gold standard care in terms of light, water, soil, fertilizer, being cared for and allowed to ripen on the vine.
