I can't eat sesame seeds. Geekboy wants some falafel. I love falafel, but I love it more with tahini. I don't seem to suffer any ill effects with toasted sesame oil. (No idea why). I was thinking maybe almond butter with a little toasted sesame oil for flavor would be a good substitute unless someone here knows of a better one.

I've seen peanut butter used in tahini recipes...I think you are on the right track with the almond butter and sesame oil.

I've been thinking about this and don't have a better answer than you've already come up with.

JB,

AFAIK, one doesn't generally put tahini in felafel at all. On them, yes, but not in them.

Yeah, I know. I didn't just fall off the Hudhud Ghanouj truck. Geekboy doesn't want the whole salad-in-a-pita thing, so I definitely wanted to make some tahini sauce to go with it, rather than just eating plain falafel.

JB,

Try a different sauce instead then. Yogurt sauce or fenugreek sauce.

BTW, an allergy to sesame hulls is not as unusual as one might think; I went to college with someone who had one.

The fenugreek sauce looks good (once the hated cilantro is disposed of) and I love me some yogurt sauce. I think I will try to make a sub for tahini, though. After all, if it works that means I could make hummus and things again.

Okey doke. Made me some tahini substitute tonight. Success! I used 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame oil to 1/2 cup raw almond butter for the tahini sauce and 1 teaspoon sesame oil to 1/4 cup almond butter for the hummus. The tahini sauce was a little too intense, but the hummus was right on. Geekboy suggested adding a pinch of wheat germ, but to me it tasted just right. Of course, I haven't eaten tahini in 7 years, so there's that. Anyway, it's more spendy than tahini, so I wouldn't really recommend it unless there's a food intolerance involved, but it was so great to just scarf a ton of hummus tonight.

Next time I make falafel, it'll be yogurt sauce city, baby.

Also had some nice TJ's beer with dinner. ;)
