Sorry to hear about your mother, Amy. Can't think of anything to add to the suggestions above. Your company is probably the best medicine.

Amy, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. A friend of mine recently went through a round of chemo and he had no appetite for any solid foods. For 6 weeks, I made a different kind of soup for him. His favorites were CI Tomato Soup and Roasted Red Pepper Soup. The Chinese make a rice porridge called "Congee". I had it the other day and it soothed my upset stomach. You can add any ingredients your Mom may like in the porridge. Hope your Mom has a speedy recovery.

Hugs,
Lu

What about yogurt? Just buy the plain and add honey, jam, whatever to make it palatable Could even add some bran to get some fiber.

You know, I asked my mom if she wanted soup and she crinkled her nose. I think she thought I meant the soup at the rehab center, which I gather from her reaction must be awful. My mom loves soup (and she makes some fabulous ones), so I think I'll make some tonight along with meatloaf and mashies for tomorrow's lunch.

Today I made some salmon quinoa cakes (bite size) with a Greek yogurt lemon caper sauce; along with some lemon oregano roasted summer squash. She ate both more so than any other food I've seen her eat since I got here. She's having the leftovers for dinner.

I'm going to pick up some Ensure, but somehow I know she's not going to like it. I'd love to make her smoothies, but she's downsized so much over the years she no longer owns a blender or Cuisinart. I know I can buy smoothies, but I'd rather control what goes into them. Oh, that I could twitch my nose and my VitaMix would magically appear before me.

Thanks all for the good wishes and ideas. It sucks to watch your parents get sick in their later years.

Amy

Sorry to hear about your Mom's surgery and illness, Amy. Ensure could be used as a snack type item......rather than a meal replacement.....so many different types and flavors now available.
My Mom actually lived off it for a month while in a hospital when the aroma of food sickened her.
Glad to hear she enjoyed what you prepared for her today........think it was the love that you put into it that helped her eat it!

Shipping that vita-mix might be just what you need to do. Perhaps there's a place you could rent one, or at least a bar blender like you might use for a party?
When in doubt, medical marihuana was very useful to mom during her three rounds of chemo.

Yes, it does, but you have all the right instincts to make it easier and less stressful.
Keep us posted please. Thinking all good thoughts for you...

Amy my mom loved coffee, so her compromise, was to add a bit of decaf to nutrition type vanilla shakes. She used mostly slim fast (sometimes Atkins) powder. She was not trying to lose weight, just using those which give you some nutrition instead of coffee in the morning. I know this sounds really strange, but the organic packets they sell for toddlers now are not too bad (my granddaughter was just here). They have calories and nutrition and they are soft. Just a thought if you get stuck.

You didn't say how long you are going to be there, but if long enough, maybe you can get a blender on Craig's list and then resell it.

Amy,
How are things going with your Mom? I hope you have found some more foods that she can eat.

Thanks. I'm back in Colorado...my sister who lives in NC is flying in tomorrow for a week. I will likely go back to Chicago in about a week and a half.

In speaking with my Mom's oncologist it's likely she will be "off" food while undergoing chemo. Her mouth is hugely sore, and everything she eats feels like needles. I'm just going to bow to whatever she says sounds remotely appealing.

I think I'll bring my VitaMix when I go back.

Amy
