I need any and all ideas about how to use these. Here is the back story - I did not buy them. A friend of mine shared my blog with his brother. They spent a weekend drinking and reading my blog. All of it, back to 2008 or so.

Anyway, my friend's brother was impressed but wanted to challenge me. So he bought a can of quail eggs from the Asian grocery and challenged me to make something good with them.

I've never had these before and I'm afraid to open them. I fear sulphurous rubbery rotten ovoids. Has anyone tried these or know about them?

Darcie,

First let me give you the best blog comment on these:

Other than that, canned quail eggs are basically just little boiled eggs. The canning doesn't exactly make 'em taste great, as you might imagine. So use them in something which requires boiled eggs, but where they get cooked a second time, or heavily spiced.

I use fresh quail eggs (when I can get them) on top of a Salad Grande Ferme. I cook them sunny side up.

I like fresh quail eggs (easy to get here so that is not on the list) but canned??? I have a strong stomach but that makes me queasy for some reason.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Adorable baby deviled eggs. Maybe curried.

Amy, I wish they were fresh! I have access to fresh quail eggs but at $1.00 each I don't find it makes much sense to get them.

How about Scotch Eggs!

Whatever you make for the judges, I would start with a chilled vodka shooter.

How about some sort of egg within an egg idea - use the quail egg as a garnish in little halves for an egg omlette for instance. Maybe use smoked salmon as a garnish or filling to the omlette. This would be flavor covering, so the quail egg would be there and visual but if the flavor is not great the smokey salmon would cover it.

What are the eggs packed in, are they pickled or just plain in saline? They might be pretty on a cobb salad with some killer bacon pieces.

Given the conditions under which the challenge was devised I strongly suggest stuffing a very large chicken with them, roast the chicken your favorite method, and serve on a bed of pasta the type of which will most closely resemble straw and serve it in a white, square, serving dish with a small bowl of corn niblets placed in front of said bird. Please have video recording at time of serving! :o  :!:

You could embed them in a meatloaf, or bake them in a curry sauce (very traditional for eggs). I like the scotch egg idea-like of like poppers.
This recipe is for a baked pasta dish with meatballs and boiled eggs layered in it.
