Does anyone make their own dog food? We are hoping to get a rescue (sort of) dog on Friday. The dog food we see has a main ingredient of corn which I understand is hard for dogs to digest.
Amy, at least you must make your own food?!

If you look up BARF (bones and raw foods) there is a huge amount of info out on the web. I never did this for my Great Danes, because they were so huge I couldn't afford it. I know people who do this and love it. |

My vet told me the higher quality commercial ones are quite good (like Iams). Congrats on your new little bundle of joy! Mary PS And no, I don't cook for my dog. |

Might want to check with a (Cornell, of course) vet. Mine recommended Purina One, but she (that would be the dog, not the vet) also gets some plain yogurt, white rice, or mixed vegetables from the frozen bag) mashed up, and a little safflower oil. Congrats on the new addition! |

Congrats!!! I didn't when I had a dog, but a number of my pet-loving friends on another site either cook it themselves or seek out the best stuff they can find What kind of doggie are you getting? |

I have cats, not dogs, but I briefly (very briefly) tried making cat food. I read some articles and ended up making a raw chicken with herbs thing. It looked like canned cat food but without all the gross parts, had calcium from ground up bones, vitamins from the herbs, you get the idea. My cats wouldn't touch it. Ingrates.  Now I feed them a blend of Purina Cat Chow and Iams. I had one cat who lived to nearly 21 and the only cat food he would eat was Meow Mix, one of the worst in terms of filler. We currently have six cats ranging from age 17 to age 3. Just call me the crazy cat lady.

Our dog loves scrambled eggs mixed in rice. He gets a few table scraps mixed with his dry food and bit of canned dog food. He's a very healthy looking stray we picked up a couple of years ago. Skinny as a bone when we got him, you could see his entire back skeleton plus he had been hit in the eye by somebody. No wonder he ran away! I've had a lot of dogs but never one as affectionate as this one. He is a real cuddler! Not that that's particularly good in a dog. I'll try to post a photo of Zippy and DH taking their afternoon nap in the recliner. Hilarious! Fitzie |

Just a hint as you try various diets-a bit of canned pumpkin is good for controlling the bowels, which can get a bit loose on some foods. |
