I used to have the most killer cream scone recipe, but cannot find it anywhere. It wasn't dry the way many scone recipes are.
For the event I'm doing this Saturday I'm serving strawberry shortcakes with a twist, and need a really good (and not dry) scone recipe to which I'll be adding almonds.
Anyone have one they love?

I love CI's Best Blueberry Scones, from Cooks Illustrated magazine, July/August 2007. Sorry, I don't have the recipe typed out, I just refer back to the magazine when I bake these.

CI has recipes for Cream Scones and also Cream and Currant Scones. Both are excellent.

Just today I made copies of my favorite scone recipes for a recipe book I'm compiling as a gift for a few young couples we know who got/are getting married this summer. (I started with about 30 recipes and I think now I'm up to at least 100 -- way more of an ambitious project than I intended. Surprise, surprise.)
Anyway, my absolute favorites (because they're way more moist than the typical scone) are the cinnamon schmear, and harvest pumpkin scones from KAF, and the blueberry (serious heaven on a plate), and cream scones from CI. You can't go wrong with any of them!!

Thanks for all your input. I ended up making another recipe which worked well.
My client was thrilled with the event, and gave me a very nice tip!

I wound up making drop biscuits for dinner after all the scone talk, they were excellent but I don't know how CI thinks the recipe makes 12, I never manage to get more than 8 or 9 max.
Amy - I so wish you could cater all my functions (few as they are!) and so am not surprised. What was the recipe source you used?

Jean,
That's very sweet of you to say.
I ended up using Karen Krasne's recipe. While I love her ideas, I'm rarely in love with her cakes. The proportions and baking temps always just seem a little off to me. But, her recipe was a little more cake-like, and that's kind of what I was going for. It was a little dry, but with the white chocolate/crème fraîche mousse, whipped cream and macerated strawberries (all on a bed of strawberry sauce) it worked. I know people really liked it because every plate was eaten clean, except one...
