How long can a butter based, confectioner's sugar frosting be left out at room temperature? I want to bring a small cake cross country to my nephew who is graduating this weekend. Airplane rules do not allow blue ice to be brought on board. I have in the past brought a plastic zip lock bag and, after passing through security, have gotten a food place to fill my bag with ice which I have put into a cooler. Nevertheless, I won't see him until the next day. (I fly in on Friday and will see him on Saturday). What would work overnight? Ideas and info? Thanks!!!!

It depends on where you're going. Will it be cool or hot outside? If the general temp. Is going to be in the 60s then stashing it on ice overnight should be fine. Much hotter and it could be a problem.
You could freeze the cake before you fly, and if you keep it chilled it will thaw gradually and be fine. It will also be less prone to getting crushed.

I leave my cakes with butter cream on the counter and don't refrigerate at all. I don't like my cake cold, especially butter cream, it can taste greasy if cold.

I leave my butter on the counter so it is always soft. Some may not agree, but I have never had an issue.

I had a quick witted TSA officer try to collect my cheddar cheese in Madison, WI...said "nothing sharp" was allowed on the plane... 8-)

Thanks everyone. I've gotten a cake past security. Blue ice was confiscated (as if there is any way to make a bomb out of those things  ) I may just buy my nephew a cupcake at a bakery for his graduation. It seems much easier.
@ Java: Of course the risk has always been that I would eat it on the plane...6 hours is a long time to be tempted! (CAAAAAAAAAAAKE!)
