I was at Coscto the other night and they has a Polder scale on clearance for $13. I bought one for me and one for my sister, but am taking them back. Absolutely useless design, you can't read the amount with a bowl on top and it's beyond finicky. Pressing Tare brings it to something around zero, so you have to press it multiple times. If you turn it on with a bowl already on top it reads as Over, even when it is not. Oh, I actually have a Soehnle as well, don't know the model. Not sure why I put Starfrit before. It works well when the battery is fresh but I find it tends to be off when the battery is dying, so I replace when I notice it acting up.

Jean,
Good to know...I was eyeing that one. Now I can avoid it.

+1 for the Oxo. I've had good luck with mine.

I have a Sharper Image digital. Bought it at BB&B for around $25, I have had no problems although the 10 pound max is a bit short for my use. With a large pot, the readout is hard to read.

I have the OXO and am pretty happy with it. My only complaints are that occasionally it will suddenly drift a bit (tare 'won't stick'), though that is pretty rare, and if you add things in very small increments it seems to read wrong; usually when you are grating fluffy bits of parm by weight... but over all, a big winner, and the pull out display (and back light) are both quite useful features.

It's very good, and has a 6 minute shut down time, as opposed to my older Polder scale, which shuts down after 1 minute. http://www.amazon.com/Grips-5-Pound-Bla ... roduct_topI've got that one, too. It's OK, I did like the Polder. When it bit the dust after a mere three years, I emailed them, and they responded and seemed interested, and then - nada. Oh, well.

Right now I am separated from my Soehnle. I am "making do" pretty well with a Pitney-Bowes postal scale, though.

KAF has a Leifheit digital model. Not in your target price range but if I were in the market I'd definitely spring for it....over the long term it'd definitely be worth it. It's sleek, easy to clean, thin, huge capacity and a good size.
