Well.... lots of drug scales out there now that pretty reliably do 0.1g measurements for much cheaper. They aren't called drugs scales of course, but a head shop is a good place to get one..... a poke through amazon will find lots well under $50. Even Lee Valley has one. (and for $17)

Well, there's a difference between *displaying* 0.1 grams and *being accurate to* 0.1 grams. While the Lee Valley scale claims the latter, I'll bet it's actually the former. Hence "not legal for trade".

However, prices *do* appear to have come down quite a bit since I bought my scale 5 years ago. Even the certified accurate 0.1 gram scales are down to $40.

Time for me to buy a second one!

I've tried the LV one and it matches my certified one within a digit. It is kind of shocking. OTOH, parts are really really cheap, and manufacturing in china is also shockingly cheap, even items like this where a large chunk of the manufacture is automated. Of course, quality of buttons, display, etc varies with price too; accuracy isn't the only thing.
