The 7.5 Shun Sumo looks identical and WS shows it cutting a LARGE eggplant. I assume when cutting a large surface item that it allows 'surface contact area' to be reduced substantially. I agree it is strange to only have it on one side; my Mighty Mac has it on both. Are there any Google reviews or discussion boards you can access? Home with a BAD cold. Must have been the lobster bisque for Valentines - -

Amy, look at Bumblebee Linens. They have lots of sizes of hemstitched linen napkins

Fitzie,
Thanks for the tip on Bumblebee Linens. I just ordered a dozen 4x4 white hemstitched cocktail napkins for $10.95!

The worst is over but no taste buds or smell buds - really fun to eat this way; but I'm saving a ton on wine!!

Sorry to be so late to this conversation, I have a Global cleaver that simply broke in half. Not used for anything tough. End of my buying their stuff. I have two Shun that I adore. Only problem is they are a bit delicate, but sharp as a mother-in-law's tongue! My 11 inch one has some knicks when a helper pulled it from the block and tried to chop bones or maybe whack a can with it. Dunno, I wasn't there at the time, but it has some pretty significant nicks toward the handle. I will have to admit that when I found them, it was not one of my better moments in terms of adult behavior. Luckily my wife managed to calm me down a bit before I ran into the helper again. So no jail time!

That happened to one of my Shun knives, too. As far as I'm concerned, it's a hanging offense. When I know that person is going to be in my kitchen, I put the Shuns away.

Steve,
To be fair to Global, flaws happen, even in the most advanced smithy. If you weren't living in the middle of the Pacific, I'm sure Global would happily replace the knife.
