Knives are so personal, how they feel in the hand, balance, comfort, and there is no way to really predict what someone will like. However, your friend will be thrilled to have these. Not that you'd ever do this, but I bet the plastic handled ones can go in the dishwasher. Oh scullery, probably no DW. F.Dick makes fine knives and these were probably made in Germany. Decent buy too with the case! Happy gift-giving.

Ivy, I so completely agree with the fact that knives are very personal things. And this is a German design, quite different than the Japanese approach, even when made for sale in USA which is what I have. Some old Kershaw chef knives which are far from trendy but are very useable that I bought at their factory sale when I lived in Portland. And my Shun knives which everyone is forbidden to use except me, since I caught one of my in-laws using a knife to pry a lid. No no no.
This will get him through the next year and half of school and whether he cottons to the German style, he will love having a professional case and his own knives to take to school. When he's working he can pick what he wants. The choices where we live are few and mostly cheap construction. Manila has some better choices but the imported stuff (if not from China) is a whole lotta pesos.
If this is a poor purchase, Fuzzie, I can live with it. I make mistakes and even at this age, want to learn from them. But the German forged knives I saw in cooking school looked good and were popular. When I bought my stuff, I was in (and still am) the throes of Japanese knife envy so I was eye balling Shun and custom Japanese makers at the time. Perhaps I should have bought the Victorinox set, but then I was going to buy knife guards, a steel and a carrying case as well. That went way over the hundred dollar number. I am still looking at the serrated edge Victorinox that Amy suggested and an acceptable digital thermometer. I won't pop for a full on Thermopen until he graduates. When I get my second one fixed he can use that for the duration.

Steve,
Look at Comark digital thermometers. They are very reasonably priced. And while not as fast as a Thermapen, a reasonable substitute.
And the small Victorinox serrated knife I have cost me all of around $8...about 6 years ago.

Amy, I am seeing serrated Victorinox but in the twenty dollar range. This is about the size of a paring knife? And I found the Comark Digital Thermometer PDT300 here at $29 bucks ... is it the one you mean?

Steve,
I googled the knife, and I was wrong. It cost me about $6. It's got a plastic handle and is a great little knife.
I looked at the thermometer on etundra.com and it's used by health inspectors, so it's probably really good.

Your killing me here Amy! So model numbers? For any of them? And, from another thread, I have cultured butter milk starter on order (again) but for delivery by FedEx or DHL this time, not the slow boat delivery service. I look forward to trying your and Paul's approach to chicken soon. Very soon! Steve

Thank you very much! I was looking at something else entirely. I will promote a couple of these over here in my next box. One for him, one for me.
