I would definitely go with the larger. You can always cut a smaller thing with the larger, but there will be some time you will wish you had a larger one, if you get the smaller one.

I have a couple Ken Onion Shun's and I love them. They are extremely sharp and also love the handles. The regular Shun handles are too slippery for me.

I have a Ken Onion chef's knife, and like it very much. I also have a Shun paring knife with the same handle as the sashimi knife I'm looking at. I love that paring knife, but did pause to think if I'd also like it in a long knife.
I'm buying the 9 1/2" and we'll see...

I'm such an impossible shopper... I googled the Shun knife and found it for $60 less on Amazon (yes, only $40 less when you factor in my professional WS discount, but still, substantially cheaper). So, I ordered the knife from Amazon, and began to use my credit with WS on some Alpico dinnerware to round out what I've got. I bought four more of these bowls, (the one on the bottom left) although I had to call a number of stores before I found them in stock. And, they were on sale! So with my discount, they were dang cheap, relatively speaking. Now, I've still got $150 to use at WS. Suggestions? Amy

Jean,
I saw that but given I've got a stereo in the room (my kitchen is part of a great room), not something I really need. Keep the good ideas coming!

Amy, I love their tablecloths, especially the Provence and Marseille. Nice big napkins, too. If you can hang them on the line, they hardly need ironing. Great for patio, porch and picnics fitzie

I was thinking it would be good for online recipe viewing more so than as a speaker. I'd probably have a movie or something playing to keep me company.
