This is such an old saw I hate to admit to it but at Christmas, a friend and I bake pumpkin bread in the coffee cans, wrap them in cellophane and tie with a red bow. We make about 30 of these and give them to people in a local nursing home. We've been doing it since the 60's. Evey year we say we're going to come up with something new but so far we haven't. In a couple of years somebody will be making them for us.

I used to make Boston Brown Bread in a coffee can. I swear that at some point in time, King Arthur sold a glass "coffee can" for making this loaf, but they didn't have them when I was thinking about buying one. It would be nice to find one, since it's pretty much impossible to find a suitable coffee can anymore.

Jes,

I was thinking about this when I was looking at all those cans I have down there - what else has cans that size NOW? Juice cans are a little wider and taller, tomato cans are too short and also wider, but could be used for 3/4 lb loaves, but there has to be something out there! You just have to go into a store with that in mind - look for the right size can. It's not really something you normally think about while shopping.

If I remember correctly you need a 10 to 12 oz. coffee can? I use those for to store used grease until I can dispose of it. Cubanfoodmarket.com sells coffee in those size cans. I am thinking that some of the large tomato products cans also come pretty close to those sizes.

Coffee used to come in 1# and 3# cans. Now they seem to be all over the place.

We only use 1# cans for our pumpkin bread, mainly because that's what we have.

The only thing I have seen coffee in for years around here is plastic. And toward the end of the metal can era, the small ones were getting too small.

They still sell it in cans in some places?

Cuban coffee still comes in metal cans. I have several cans of it, though mine are Pilon since my father use to run the company when we were in Cuba. Instead of jumping on foam balls at McDonalds, I use to jump on huge mounds of coffee beans.
