Maybe the particular model I got had an issue with the motor and that's why it hesitated from time to time and got quite hot when it was kneading. The whip I have is the larger one that has 11 wires, not the one that came with the 6 quart model. The circumference is just a hair too wide to clear the sides of the bowl.

And of course the fact that I decided against it at this point doesn't mean it won't be worth it for me to upgrade in the future :). My initial experience with it just didn't justify the cost at this point.

KitchenAid's 7 Qt Lift BowlStand Mixer is now on KA's outlet site at $399.99. Free Shipping for Cyber Monday.

A hot case is probably not a cause for alarm and could be good news if the motor and gearbox is being cooled more efficiently.

Resurrecting this thread b/c my 6 quart professional model bit the dust yesterday when I was kneading dough. It wasn't quite maxed out as far as the flour but I had the speed at 3 instead of 2. The recipe called for it. Of course that was for a single rather than double recipe. Whoops.

Fortunately for once in my life I got an extended warranty when I bought it 5 years ago -- a 10 year plan that only cost like $69. I just called them and they don't even try to repair it -- are sending me a check for $399.:D So... I'm probably going to get the 7 quart mixer again. For just $125 more it's a no-brainer, I think.

But I'm also wondering about the possibility of repairing this one. My son's girlfriend loves to bake and would be thrilled to have it. I recall seeing some posts about a few of you guys working on yours, but couldn't find them just now. I think maybe the gears are stripped... the motor works and it spins around but after a couple of turns it starts skipping, so to speak. So I'd appreciate any insight on how big a deal it would be to try and fix it.

Thanks!

Emilie

As long as your six quart mixer was built after 2004, repair is possible and the procedure has approximately the same degree of difficulty as poking around inside a computer- only with grease.

The Mending Shed has a .PDF service manual for download and will sell you parts at reasonable price.

As long as the motor still runs, you can usually bring a six quart back to life with less than $100 worth of parts and tools. Experienced hands can rebuild it less than an hour. A complete novice should be able to do it in three.

I have some pictures of the repair procedure and their are several videos on You Tube.. I have not watched the complete video, but I will and comment on it if I think the procedure will result in a working mixer.

If I had to guess at the parts needed to fix yours, they would be the gear cover, worm gear, worm gear bearings, thrust washer, worm follower gear, and some grease. If it was a truly inspired train wreck, the center shaft could be bent and require a new plantetary. Good Luck and have fun. :)

Dagnab it! That is close to what I paid for the Kitchen Aid Pro 600 that is currently bobbing its way across the ocean to me. I take a little solace that there are so many extras available for the KA 600 that are either not available or likely much more expensive for the 7 quart beastie. I got a couple of the nice beater blades from Metro, a spare bowl, and the water bath which will be very handy for doing emulsified sausage. The latter is really the most important part for my hotdog 'n sausage obsession. But the 7 quart's capacity and reputed strength for handling heavier batters is a siren song for both myself and my wife. Maybe when we get back to the USA next year, we'll look at the 7 quart harder.
