Is there any such thing as a good kitchen scale in the $25.00 range? Need a gift for a new cook and would like one that works and will last a while. Thanks. fitzie

The Escali Primo fits that description, has an 11 lb capacity, uses AA batteries, and comes in lots of colors. I almost bought one the last time I needed a scale, but ended up getting an OXO at twice the price instead. OXO also has a 5 pound capacity version of their scale for less money. Five pounds is adequate for most measuring needs, but falls short when you want to weigh a mixer bowl fill of bread or cookie dough.

I have the Oxo scale - it's $28.99 at Amazon. It's very good, and has a 6 minute shut down time, as opposed to my older Polder scale, which shuts down after 1 minute. http://www.amazon.com/Grips-5-Pound-Bla ... roduct_top

FWIW I'm going to chime in with the myWeigh scales. This one is close to what I have (I have the 8001, slightly more expensive). It comes with the AC adapter which is nice, but the batteries last forever in any case. It's very accurate and the vendor is trustworthy.

Anyone remember on TOBB when that scale/vendor was first discussed. Didn't someone say the bird scale didn't work on their grocery store chickens? (bird scale: http://www.oldwillknottscales.com/bird-scale.html) I have a starfrit, it's okay, but when it goes I'll likely go for a more accurate scale. I find myself doubting this one.

I have the Soehnle Bernina. Spendy, but it has lasted 5-6 years now. It hangs on the wall and I would highly recommend it if you need to save space. However, because it hangs on the wall it takes quite a while to settle. That's annoying and not worth it if space is not an issue.
