I am the potential proud owner of this piece of '80's awesome -- The Pyrex Bake AroundIt apparently works as advertised and I think they may have been a popular gift back when Mork first met Mindy. At least that would explain why they are pretty easy to find on e-bay complete and in their boxes. It may have baked cool looking bread, but it still required all the effort of baking normal-looking bread. Hence, it sat around in its box until it could be unloaded without the original giver finding out. As someone who bakes lots of bread, I'm not averse to the work, I'm just wondering if round bread is worth the real estate in my cupboard. So, whaddaya think? Snatch it up or pass?

I had one of those. In fact I think it is still in the top shelf of my panty. I think I though it would help shape baguettes which I was making at the time. Then I got divorced and ended up working 3 jobs and stopped baking bread. It might be fun to try it if I didn't put it in one of the Salvation Army piles.

How do I bake thee? Let Me count the ways. I bake thee to the depth and breadth of my Le Creuset pot complete with stainless orb. I bake thee to the level of my Baparoma Steam Baking Master I bake thee in a metal cradle full of holes I Shape thee in a wooden cradle made of twigs. I bake thee on a rock, or mabe it’s a stone
I don’t bake thee in a Pyrex Bake Around yet, but I an sorely tempted as I have no will power. Procure it post-haste.

I had one of those too, bought it late 1970's and used it about 3-4 times. Junked it when we sold my Dad's house 2 years ago. I don't regret junking it. Nance

Jim,
Hah!
JB,
I personally can't imagine a use for the thing. It's pretty easy to get baguettes fairly round on their own, and who needs them to be perfectly round?

I knew somebody who got one of those in the early 80's, a year or two before I bought my house in '83. She used it maybe three times, before going back to the old ways. The half round black metal pans work muck better for long loaves, and are much easier to drop the dough into. The novelty of the round cylinder of bread wears off quickly, and it doesn't work every time (you have to make the dough too stiff, or it won't fill up - just spread out).

Well, I've decided to take it for a test drive before sending it to the garage sale pile. I'll be sure to use a stiff dough. Might even take a pic.

Fitzie,
I still bake some rye bread in those cans - I have a bunch of those in my basement, many of which have not been used, since they can not be had any longer. The bread from those is great for some round cold cuts, which fit perfectly.
