I've been acquiring a number of specialty knives which do not fit in my existing knife block, so I've been looking around and came across this one from Europe.

Seems like a really cool option. Anyone have recommendations on other blocks? I'd love to do a wall magnet, but just would not work in my kitchen. Virtually all chopping in my house happens on my island.

Here's what was said in 2008 by Cook's Illustrated when a Viva Terra Bamboo Box Knife Holder was not recommended.

Quote:
Holds knives at an awkward 90-degree angle, and when you pull them out, unattached skewers pop up, too. It's also flimsily constructed.

Bodum Bistro was highly recommended.

Amy,
I have one with what looks like brush bristles in it that I really like. It has a magnetic strip on the side that is great for paring knives. It is slightly angled and the bristles have never come out. It is not as pretty as the ones you posted though.
If you want, I will take a photo and post it. I found one for my brother at some random kitchen store in Cleveland.

Jim,

Thanks for the input. I looked at the Bodum Bistro, and frankly just don't like the styling. It surprises me CI would poopoo the bamboo one, when absolutely everyone who wrote a review of it on the site I pointed to loves it. (Perhaps they've changed it in the last five years?) And, one of the dings CI gave it was 90 degree lifting, but the Bodum is exactly the same. I don't care about the angle, because my knives live on my island.

Mary, would love to see a pic.

Here you go! The other is much cuter though.

I'm a sucker for cute too...as long as it works well.

I'd be afraid the knives would fall out, hanging from the ceiling like that...

Ya, I couldn't decide whether I should do a 180' or whether my computer should...but you know these damn iPads, they just keep reorienting themselves...

I see it right side up. Must have something to do with the dateline.

Or, you could buy a metric buttload of bamboo skewers and chuck them into any straight-sided tall bin that catches your fancy. Heck, if you can find an old Kapoosh that someone wants to get rid of, you can even have the angled hold. Just chuck out the nylon insert (retain the little tray they sit in), chuck in the skewers, and you're in business. Then go spend the money you saved on some more cookbooks.
