That was fascinating, Nancy. Thanks so much for posting the link!

I love my LC pieces (am still coveting the 5 quart braiser, even though I went with Lodge cast iron for a wok). Not to mention that they really retain their value -- I sold a 2 qt. dutch oven recently on eBay because I rarely used it and got almost what I originally paid retail for it.

Thanks for the interesting post. I have lusted the LC line but purchased Lodge enamel dutch oven because of cost. We are headed south in July & I plan to stop in South Pittsburg, TN at the Lodge factory outlet store.

Many, many thanks for this excellent article. I have never owned or used their products but I greatly admire their quality standards.

If someone has the time, I'd love to learn why you feel there is a difference... :)

I'm happy with beautifully made stuff that has had craftsmanship and love put in it and shows it. It doesn't have to be functionally better; as an engineer, it was a hard battle to kick the function habit, but I made it. Now if it is functionally inferior, you might be pushing my limits, the aesthetics etc are gonna have to be awfully good to make up for that.

(That was the long -- and likely unintentionally rude -- way around to saying I doubt there is a performance difference. Maybe the cover is tighter then cheap knock-offs. Maybe.)

Definitely did not interpret your remarks as rude, just very informative and I agree with you completely. But even my wallet puckers up when I see their prices :o

I'm squarely in the camp of craftsmanship being just as important as functionality. (And Wino's right -- there was no rudeness there, Paul.) There's just something about LC pieces that feel so solid and well made (but not nearly as heavy as Staub, which is a deal breaker for me as far as their stuff). Not to mention the way they're all individually cast, etc. And Bill, fwiw, if you find yourself near an LC outlet on your travels south of the border, you can get great deals on both first and second quality stuff. I've never paid close to full price for a LC piece (although I don't have a huge collection -- just 2 sizes of round large dutch ovens and a smaller narrow oval one, plus a giant roaster I got years ago.)

However somehow this thread (and my long work hours of late) enabled me just yesterday to buy the large braiser that I'd been eyeing on eBay for a while that was just relisted at a lower price. It'll be like a new baby arriving when the UPS man shows up with it. And I can blame it all on David Lebovitz
