Fuzzy slamming his toe and needing an ice pack reminded me to share a handy ice pack recipe. It's been around awhile but in case you do not have it here it is. Pour one cup rubbing alcohol and two cups water into a one-quart, ziplock bag (double for gallon size). Squeeze air out and freeze. It works well because the ice pack never freezes solid so it remains pliable. Some people add blue food coloring but I do not in case of a leak.

Oh. I'll remember that for when I'm traveling.

So you don't mistake it for other random bags of half-frozen water in your freezer.
I think it's just a visual reminder not to eat it, but if you are putting it in a ziploc, you can just label it with a sharpie. I assume it would be more of an issue if you had young kids who can't read. "Don't eat the blue stuff." is the sort of simple instruction that stands a chance of sinking in.

Linda - I guess blue food coloring helps some people differentiate it from other things in the freezer, especially when it comes to the kids looking for an ice pack.
After double ziplock-ing my ice pack I also gave it an extra seal using the foodsaver.

With the blue food coloring, they might just think it's an Otter Pop.
