Yes, it's actually true (and not from a kit). Chris' family all grow grapes of uncertain type along trellises in their backyards, and use it to make both red and white wine. It's truly horrible. Then they use the wine to make grappa in a huge copper still. Chris says he was not allowed to talk about it as a kid because it's not exactly legal.
Commercial wine is not made from grapes here. There is a fruit wine maker, but I'm not a fan. My dad had a dandelion wine and rose hip wine kick in the 70's. It too was bad. Fortunately things have changed, as he now buys grape juice every year (in Kelowna) and makes pretty good table wine with it. Merlot and Cab mainly - wich are better than his whites (which is surprising because BC is known for its whites).
