but I'm posting here because I know some of you, and DH is driving me bonkers.

The mess in the gulf is NOT AN OIL SPILL!!! An oil spill is when a specific amount of oil is being discharged like say, the Exxon Valdez. That was an "oil spill."

This is a blowout. It's uncontrolled, and there was a fire.

Whatever, they are both disasters on a terrorist level.

That is all.

The whole situation is so sad.

I have an idea its "spin" - "oil spill" sounds kind of benign, like a "woopsie" whereas, blowout sounds really, really awful.

Remember when the inheritance tax became "the death tax?" That kind of hype......

Nothing is certain except death taxes. I suppose "cataclysm of Biblical proportions" is a little wordy for CNN.

KSyrahSyrah, very interesting. I had not thought of it; the media should indeed kick the 'spill' moniker and get something more accurate and representative. It does indeed look like spin, though I am not sure it started out that way (they would be inclined to spin it to something even more benign like 'incident' or the like I imagine)
