Jean, they don't do that here. I can buy one organic banana if I want. In fact, the organic section even at my small, rural grocery store sells almost everything loose, even potatoes. The only things in bags are carrots. |

It keeps people from tearing off 1 or 2 organic bananas and keying 4011 at the self checkout instead of 94011 (or not telling the checker that they're organic) |

Pete, I figured as much. Just frustrating. Darcie, I should qualify that not all of them do it. But most in my area do (lots of dishonest people?  ) and the one that I know doesn't isn't in my normal route. I like bananas just a shade past green, so try to never buy more than 3 at a time.

First they institute the self-checkers for "convenience", and then they start changing the products they sell to support the self-checkers. |

Hi everyone! I think it is always interesting to read about organic food research even if it is flawed like the one mentioned... I personally believe the problem is not with the research on organic food but on the research of non-organic: many chemicals used during production have unknown effects on health, therefore I think one has a good reason to prefer organic food. Other related story is that few years ago we had an organic "farm" (actually: garden) at my family's place and I had controversial feelings towards it: lotta of fruits eaten by insects, and the few who survived the worms and stuff does gets rotten fast... I still think it has to do something with the climate...

LOL, I've been watching Stanford getting called on this study across so many different forums including the red-neck BBQ boys! Jeanf, you hate banana bread? I did too for about five and half decades. Then my wife got into making it. Bread machine mind you and something changed. Loss of taste buds in my old age maybe? Whatever, now I insist on a loaf at least every couple of weeks. We do "drunken raisins" in ours, soaking them in dark rhum for an hour or so. Give BB a try after you hit 60 or so. You may find it isn't nearly so bad as you remember! |
