So I am at the grocery store last night and I am walking up to the Self Checker and what do I see on display. Honeycrisp Apples. I love these Apples. Four very large Apples cost $4.65 at Kroger. I will be making a trip to the Fruit Market this weekend where I know they will be considerably cheaper than Kroger.

Hi,
Apple varieties may only be grown where they have appropriate growing conditions. Central Illinois is not the place to grow caval blancs, northern spy, cortland, or other cold weather apples.
We now have wonderul Pinova's, Melrose (fabulous pies), NY 428's, and many others. A close friend has crossed a new patented apple, Honey Suckle Rose (soft skin, extreme juicyness, great crunch and sweet/tart balance) just for our growing conditions. Our beloved Gold Rush apples are still weeks away.

Not one of those apples do we get... my default apple is usually Gala. The Gravenstieners are out now though and are a short lived pleasure.

Amy You are absolutely right about the Northern Spies for pies. When I cook up at my friends cabin, there is an Orchard across the road and one of the trees is Northern Spie. If I am up there when the apples are ripe, these are the only ones I use.

Honeycrisps are a relatively new breed of apple meant for eating out of hand, although they make really good soft cider, too. They are pretty nearly perfect, IMHO. The skins are medium-tender and the flesh is (as the name would suggest) very crisp and sweet. They have a bit of a tart kick, too, but not as much as you'd expect from a good cooking apple. Maybe it's time to head to the Franklin Cider Mill for our yearly doughnut and cider fix, not to mention the gallon of maple syrup we buy each fall and a big bag of honeycrisps.
Wow, and I just had breakfast, too, so it's not like I'm hungry...

Oh, JesBelle,
I used to live near the Franklin Cider Mill. Their cider with warm cinnamon doughnuts is one of the things I miss about Michigan. It's been a very long time......
Please tell us all about it so I can enjoy it vicariously.

I'm all too aware of the regional growing habits...can't get Spies here in Colorado. I've considered having them shipped from orchards in Michigan or NY, but alas, too expensive.
