One comment to the article mentions Miso. Kenji's response was, "Miso in chili = genius. I must try that next time." Another commenter mentions fermented chili bean sauce that I am not familiar with.
My interest in this recipe is for a potluck dinner group that we are hosting in March. The vegetarians in the group are now vegan. I normally do not cater to their dietary needs and they do not press the issue, but when we host it I try to leave my comfort zone a bit and prepare something that everybody will eat. If sharing an interesting recipe from a trusted source is now "trolling", I guess I am officially a troll.

I sure hope I do not turn to stone when the sun comes up tomorrow.
