Let me tell you, it was grisly. If I hadn't made it in a very expensive copper-clad pot (the reason the house didn't catch fire) I would have thrown the darn thing away. I literally had to chisel my way down to the bottom of the pan. It made copious amounts of smoke but naturally the smoke detector (which goes off when searing steaks) didn't chirp until the entire kitchen was engulfed. The pan's bottom is a bit scratched up but still serviceable. It just has a few spots where things like to stick now.
What is worse, this is not the first time I've burned caramel that badly.
