I just had to share this since not too many people would understand. I've finally completed a 30+ year quest. I grew up near San Francisco and was so in love with the sourdough there that I used to ask for it for dessert. After being exiled in Boston (with small stops in Chicago and NYC) for well over 30 years, I have continuously searched for great sourdough bread and tried many times to make it. No success in repeating the bread of my dreams. Today I finally found it! If any of you are ever in Boston, a stop at Il Formaggio is an obligatory stop (it's a famous cheese store that, among other things, has its own cave), and they now have a new bread purveyor who finally gets it. I am one happy camper.

Hehe. My sister used to spend her candy money on sourdough bread.

Speaking of which, I need to make sourdough bread on Wednesday night so that I can have it for the cheese party on Friday.

Mind you, for me it's a "throw starter in bowl, add 6 cups flour and 1 cup water ...". Easy-peasy when the wild yeast lives in your apartment. Especially when it's as moist as it is now.

Who's the bread purveyor? I don't go by Formaggio all that much since it's pretty inconvenient for me to get to and I can get a lot of great cheeses at WF, BUT would love to know if anybody else in my area carries that bread. Also, I highly recommend you visit Island Creek Oyster Bar if you haven't already. I was totally blown away and can't wait to get back... It's right at the Kenmore T stop and a little pricey (although we did order about over dozen oysters each...)

Thanks, Kate for the tip. Like an idiot I didn't think to ask who was the purveyor. It was a huge round of bread and they sliced off wedges and sold it by the pound, so no label. Will let you know when I get back there.

Yum. I am almost entirely gluten free but make exceptions when it's worth the pain... A good sourdough would be worth the pain!!!
