As a Yankee livin' in Canuckville I get to enjoy both country's celebrations; one can never get too much fireworks and good times.

We went to the Butte Falls July 4th parade this morning. Butte Falls is a tiny town (pop 430), and I think our party was the only one there who weren't residents. People asked us which house we'd moved into. The parade was so small, they have it go around the town square twice. Definitely different from San Francisco!

Now we're going to a family friend's for BBQ party, and will follow that by going over to the hill which overlooks two different fireworks events, letting us get in our full-on tennis-match fireworks watching.

Natch for cooking though. I made a big salad.

My daughter lives in an older historic part of town who celebrate with a bicycle parade and block party. We had to go, of course, because Jack, our 5yr old great grandson was in the parade. He was so excited he couldn't sit still for days. Saw some old friends we hadn't seen in ages. Lots of good picnic food. And my daughter's next door neighbour is from the Philippines and is going to give me cooking lessons. She brought egg rolls and steamed dumplings with a couple of wonderful sauces. The best I've ever eaten. Don't know if these are from the Philippines or not but they were absolutely delicious. Home in time to watch the neighborhood fireworks.

We celebrated yesterday with a bunch of expats and sympathetic Swiss. I had about 25 people here. I grilled Italian sausages with peppers and onions as per Serious Eats... excellent, you precook the sausages in the peppers and onions and then finish them on the grill. I also made some burgers and chicken kabobs as some people do not like sausage (shocking as that is). It was a great party but I did miss the parades and fireworks though.

We will not be bringing fireworks. Parades are negotiable.

We're having a belated Canada Day BBQ here today. DH is going to be in charge of a mixed grill with sausages, steaks, and chicken thighs. I've made an antipasto platter (procuitto, genoa salami, mortadella, friulano cheese, aged Gouda, Brie, olives, grape tomatoes, pears and accompanying flatbread and crackers), sundried tomato dip with pretzels, pasta salad (I'm trying Pioneer Woman's recipe from the most recent Food Network mag) and coleslaw. Dessert is angel food cake (that I bought), strawberries from the farmer's market, and whipped cream. Hopefully the weather holds. The forecast is not looking hopeful but so far it's overcast but no rain.
