Since it's both the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah and of Oktoberfest, this morning my sweetie made Kaisershmarn with apples and honey.
What are you doing for this year's German Jewishfest?

We are experiencing summer weather, so I made burgers plus put away another 30 or so for lunches/dinners . I will have a beer tomorrow though!

If you're ever in Portland during the Mt. Angel Octoberfest, you really should go; it's a hoot!

Finally got around to making serious German fare, partly because we picked up strudel at the bakery.
We made spatzle from scratch for the first time! Using a collander! It was messy, and required two people but it worked surprisingly well. One of Todd's plastic scrapers from the Cleveland meetup was perfect. And the spatzle was really delicious.
Anyone else do some Oktoberfest treats?

We're doing Polish food tomorrow. Close enough? Seriously, though, I see some sauerbraten in the near future. My food mill reduces spaetzle to a one person job.

As fate would have it, I also made a German like meal yesterday. Venison with a whiskey coffee sauce and (as an ode to the pumpkin trend) pumpkin spaetzli that had no pumpkin but used sweet potato, I am going to keep both recipes. Here is the spaetzli one: http://mamaozzystable.blogspot.ch/2012/ ... -sage.htmlThe venison one is in German but I can translate it if anyone is interested. I also roasted some grapes to go,with it and had apple dumplings for dessert. Fuzzy, To make spaetzli, I use a flat metal round that has holes in it that fits over the top of a pot. You scrape the dough in with a plastic scraper. It is called a spaetzli sieve. It works like a charm. Only takes one person. Mary

Mary,
Yeah, I'm just reluctant to acquire a new tool for a dish I'm likely to make at most twice a year. I mean, the various spatzle makers are cheap enough. It's just the storage space ...
