Not counting Chinese New Year here, which is still 2+ months away, or Rosh Hashanna, which was 3 months ago, people often eat special foods to for good fortune in the upcoming year. What's yours, if anything?
Since my MIL is from Oklahoma, we're about to chow down on blackeyed peas and cornbread ...

After my Mexican dinner was finished, and everyone had gone home, I put my cut up ham bone in the slow cooker, along with some seasonings, and set it to cook about 3:00 am, along with a lb of black eyed peas plus 6 oz of marrow beans (these seem to dissolve faster, and thicken the soup. And instead of rice, used in traditional hoppin' John, I added a cup of whole grain oak, which made a much more nutritious dish.
What is it about BEPs and New Year? A number of cultures use them in traditional NY dishes.

Not that we were hung over, just had an extremely lazy day which was a treat for us.

I'm with you Jean. I was anything but hungover as I worked NYE, and yesterday I went to a friend's house and had lots of comfort food...nothing traditional, just a LOT of different smoked foods, including smoked beans, which I really enjoyed.

We just ate crap and and watched the entire first season of News Room. Well not crap, Bergen Bagels from Brooklyn with smoked salmon and cream cheese and later some beef tartar and the last of the Christmas cookies. I have no desire to either cook or eat on the 1st. I did grow up with roast pork and sauerkraut and get a hankering for it this time of year. Anyone have a good recipe?

Nothing special except 12 grapes at midnight, which is a Cuban tradition. I made my normal short ribs which I make every year because it is made ahead and just simmered that day, but it isn't a "special" tradition.

I love Newsroom. Looking forward to season 3 as much as I am season 4 of Downton Abbey. These are the only two series I watch.

Sometimes I'll make hoppin' John or vaslopita, but I decided to hang with the kid yesterday. We've been super busy lately and the lack of attention was making him rather cranky. Because Geekboy had NYE off instead of NYD, we had our meal then -- ham, scalloped potatoes, green beans, cornbread, and the from-a-mix brownies I got from my MIL. Yesterday was just ham sandwiches, but today is split-pea soup (Yay!).
