I think Kris and I have this researched, but does anyone know of foodie places in Mendocino county which we might not be aware of? Anderson Valley wineries you'd recommend? Also, does anyone on the board live near there? |

Frank, Yeah, we looked at Cafe Beaujelais, since they are the famous Mendocino restaurant. But, they're expensive ... and their Boulliabase has chicken in it. That alone is worthy of a shunning, if not a firebombing. |

Fuzzy, I grew up near there and my mom works at a clothing store in town. Here is something I found online. I've driven past this place but never eaten there. Headlands Coffee House in Ft. Bragg is worth a stop for cozy coffee and pastries. North Coast Brewing Company (Ft. Bragg) is very worth a stop if beer is anything you enjoy. There used to be a little cafe in Ft. Bragg at the north end of town on the ocean side of the main street. I can't remember the name, but it was a good place for a reasonably priced, healthy, local, vegetarian lunch. My family used to rave about the Purple Rose (north of Ft. Bragg on Hwy 1), but I haven't been there in a long time and can't remember if I vouch for it or not. There is good fish and chips down at the wharf in Ft. Bragg. The Cliff House, in Ft. Bragg is to be avoided. Honestly, Mendocino is a small town. Walk around, you will quickly get a feel for the place. Stop by Twist. If Lark is working, tell her her son (my name really is Tim) says hi and that she should give you all the local tips on what to do. Sorry I can't be more help, but it has been a while since I've been there just to relax and enjoy (I usually have my kids, doing the visit grandma thing). The locals are generally very nice and happy to give you tips. Enjoy your trip and dress like you are staying in SF (i.e., the weather will be familiar). |

We were there a couple years ago and it had a great time (we stayed at a place called Irish Beach). We ate lunch the the B. Cafe and it was excellent. I didn't realize it was so famous but I still remember the soup I had there, it was chicken and something but just so fresh and wonderful. Also the gardens were gorgeous. The other place that stands out was a chocolate store that sold fresh raspberries in white chocolate, I can taste it now. Oh yes, in Fort Bragg there is a place called glass beach that is on the site of an old bottle or glass factory and it is mainly made of washed glass. It wasn't beautiful like I imagined but we got tons of sea glass to bring home in case anyone in this house goes through a crafty period. Have a great time, I love the N. CA coast, it is so magical. Mary I used to go to Glass Beach a lot as a kid. I'm afraid it is actually an old dump, with everything but the glass and some rusting metal washed away by time. It is a lot of fun though. |
