Going to France for about 3 weeks in May.... Paris, then Provence (will be based in Avignon), then the Loire Valley (based in Tours), and then back to Paris for a few more days. Any restaurant recommendations for any of these places would be greatly appreciated. We'll be relying on public transportation in Paris but have a car for the rest of the trip. In Paris, does anyone have any recommendations for good stores - particularly where you can get cooking equipment. Also, I'd be interested in getting some suggestions for markets to go to. Fitzie is right. Also the cooking school I went to with Pete and Kathy was fantastic, we took a market class where we were taken to different shops, and then decided what to make. A day very well spent, lots of good info. http://www.cooknwithclass.com/. In the Provence, my favorite area is the Luberon. The food is fantastic, cute little towns, nice folks (especially when you are not there during the main tourist crunch). There is a fantastic weekly market in Apt every Saturday. Plan to get there early as it is the biggest in the area and it is not always easy to get a parking space (also watch your purse!). We have also eaten in this place a couple times: http://www.mastourteron.com/uk/index.php It is a great restaurant and a stunning garden setting. I just asked my husband if he still had the card and he said, "are we going?". I need to save more restaurant cards... I can tell you what to eat though: any kind of fried potato, composed salads, hamburgers (I am serious), citron pressé (lemonade), savory tart tatins, anything in a shell. Not food, but in Rustral (maybe Rostral) there are gorgeous red canyons. Also, just drive around the back roads and find small hand painted signs and follow them. We found a lavender distillery, a very cool potter and an old olive oil mill this way. Isle du Sorgue is a very picturesque town, lots of antique shops, but a major rip off. If you are interested in that kind of stuff, look for signs that say Brocante when you are looking for olive oil mills. This is the area that was made popular by the book "A Year in Provence" (read or re-read it when you are there) so the great deals we found when we first started going there are no longer available. We have a nice collection of old olive oil pots from back then. I have been in Avignon a couple times but only to visit the pope's palace and dance on the bridge. The restaurants around there were rather touristy and I was not as enchanted with it as the little villages. Could be we didn't know where to go though. Now I am wondering why I am spending the long weekend here and not in France... Enjoy yourself, sounds like a fantastic trip. Mary |

Thanks so much for all of this great information! I've visited the websites you've suggested and they've all been terrific. In the mean time, we are signed up for 2 cooking classes (so far), made a few lunch and dinner reservations, and I'm definitely going to go to the cookware store that everyone cited. Have a great time! I love Paris - I lived there for 6 months many eons ago. I wish I could live there permanently. By the way, can you hide me in your suitcase?! |
