About two years ago I put a bird feeder in the back yard. It's been immensely popular, attracting morning doves, finches, nuthatches, and one species I'm working with eBird to identify.
One thing I've noticed, aside from amazing voraciousness of these little seed vacuums (we use up about 4lbs of birdseed per week), is that we have a lot fewer earwigs and snails than we used to. In fact, it's been weeks since I've even seen an earwig, and they used to be a major hazard for all of my herb pots.

Oh that's it! I am putting up a bird feeder this year. Earwigs seriously creep me out and they are all over our back yard.

I am glad it works for you. We have lots of birds, woodpeckers love our roof, as well as hummingbird, and other than stop to take a drink from the pool, especially now that the dogs are gone. I've not noticed fewer earwigs or other bugs. The joys of living in the country I guess.

Unfortunately, the squirrels in my neighborhood have learned to outsmart every type of bird feeder manufactured (esepecially those sold as "squirrel proof"). I miss having a bird feeder(s).

Ilene, I have my bird feeder on the end of a 3' long metal rod and a 2' long metal wire, suspended 6' off the ground. It's also one of those narrow cylindrical ones which the squirrels can't land on if they jump. Besides, the morning doves would peck their eyes out. Nope. I'd need a telephoto lens, and I don't have one.
The bird *looks* like a Common Rosefinch, which would apparently make me famous among birders, since only 20 have been sighted in North America, ever. However, it's probably just a Purple Rosefinch which has an unusual amount of red.
