Kathy,
OK, oven-only is a lot easier than stovetop. And the conical shape is relatively easy, although that's a fairly large size. Any idea of the diameter of the bottom portion?

Josh,
The bottoms on the cassoles from France are about/at least half the diameter of the top. The only ones I've seen here (on the internet from Clay Coyote) have very narrow bottoms. I'm afraid they wouldn't be very stable - I'm a real klutz - I'd surely knock it over.
The inside needs to be glazed, but the outside can be glazed, unglazed, partially glazed, drippy glaze....... whatever looks nice. Cooking the beans in the clay pot gives a far superior texture than enameled cast iron. And the shape - wide, open top and narrowing sides create the best crust.
Handles don't have to be much - just a bit to help get a good grip.

Looks doable. $50 plus shipping? Note that it probably won't be ready until January.

Kathy,
You know, it seems to me that you could do the pure cone shape if you gave the casserole a nice "foot" which was wider. I'll experiment a bit.

Immersion weights, and some more salt pigs, are in the kiln now. Unloading tonight or tommorrow morning (depending on temperature).

As I used to have a small shop that sold pottery, in addition to other 'stuff', I remember those late night firings quite well. Pretty sure some alcohol was involved... Great looking pieces!
