Post subject: | Datil Peppers |
A friend has a very prolific datil pepper bush, and she brought me a big bag of them. I didn't want them to get forgotten with the holiday coming up so I threw them in the dehydrator. Now I have a quart sized bag of dried datils. Any suggestions on usage other than just crushing and using for fruity heat? Thanks, --Lisa |

There used to be a place in St. Augustine that sold a datil pepper jelly. I once bought a case to give as part of gift baskets. Can they be reconstituted? If I had a batch of the peppers, I think I'd make some jelly. |

How hot are those peppers? Datils vary considerably in heat (one I grew was around 400k), but they are a chinense pepper, so you could use them in anything calling for a dried habanero. One of the things I use ground habaneros in during the holidays are those hot gingersnaps. |

They are pretty darn hot but very fruity. I may try to make the jelly next year... her bushes produce quite a lot of fruit. I have a big jar of the vinegar and now a quart bag dried. I may just crush some and put them in a shaker. Thanks for the ideas. --Lisa |
