This month's issue of Saveur is interesting: two feature-length encyclopedic articles, one about refrigerators, and one about bananas. Both are quite well done and informative, but made me flip to the cover to make sure I'd picked up the right magazine.
There's also a very thorough article on stir-frying, and an article on Kenyan food, the first I've seen in any magazine anywhere. Typically, the cover story (comfort food) is actually related only to a single 2-page article on mac&cheese. Sometimes I wonder if the cover designers ever actually talk to the magazine editors.
