The Perfectionist: Life and Death in Haut Cuisine by Rudolph Chelminski (2005) concerns the life and death by suicide of the great chef Bernard Loiseau. An exceptionally well written, in-depth study of a man the author new throughout the chef’s life. His access to many of the greatest French chefs of the 20th century, to the chef’s staff, and his wife provides insight into an extremely rarified world and the toll that lifestyle takes on the business, the personalities, and the relationships. An extraordinary read for those interested in this world. I found it deeply moving. |

I didn't realize that the plot of Ratatouille (the movie) has its roots in Loiseau's life story (from Wikipedia). |
