Emma has requested a baking book for Christmas. She's beyond the age of a "kid's" cookbook but she doesn't need anything too advanced (yet) - she will turn 11 in 2014. Any recommendations? We're thinking something with clear instructions and lots of color photos would be appropriate, possibly by a chef that she eventually will have heard of (but not Nigella).
What say the experts?
thanks, P & K Somewhere at sea

But seriously, the King Arthur Flour Baking Companion covers lots of recipes and it's not too fussy.

Probably will shop Amazon on Thursday (Internet time is too dear before then). Keep the suggestions coming!

I missed the "baking" part in the title. Not necessarily a kid's book but am intrigued with Yvonne Ruperti's One Bowl Baking and that might work for her.

Anne Willan has done a series of "look and cook" books, not necessarily for kids, and at least one of them deals with baking. I just checked Amazon-the titles include Classic breads, Pies and tarts, and Chocolate desserts. I like these books, even with all of my experience.

Kris recommends:
Your Time To Bake is aimed at rank novices. Kris hasn't used it, but has heard good things. There used to be a Joy of Cooking For Kids, which was excellent, but you'd have to hunt through the used bookstores for it. Also in the out-of-print camp is Fearless Baking. She also recommends the author Abigail Johnson Dodge's The Weekend Baker.

I bought some for a friend's dad when he had to suddenly take on the cooking in the house and he loved them too. I'd forgotten about them....must start looking for my boys.
