What's your favorite? My eldest niece is getting married (yikes! I'm not THAT old) and she definitely has an interest in cooking. What book would you guys get her? From her registry, I can tell she's very interested in baking as well.

When I got married someone sent us a set of cookbooks: Moosewood, James Beard's American Cookery and a French cookbook whose name has escaped me. I think, of them all, Beard's has been the most useful. I think everyone should have the Joy of Cooking but am also in love with Jamie Oliver, especially for a newer cook. I don't even have a baking cookbook (I bet my husband wishes I did).

If she is into baking, take a look at "Baked", the first book....I have made almost everything in it and everything is wonderful. Beautiful photos as well. They have recently released their second book and perhaps the set would be a nice gift.

I agree with all but would add Mark Bittman's "How To Cook Everything", and a few others of his. Recipes are straightforward, simple, and don't have 2 pages of ingredients.

Pam Anderson's "How to Cook Without a Book" is a nice resource for weekday meals. It's mostly simple formulae that can be built on and personalized.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I went with Bittman's How to Cook Everything and Baked. I think that's a nice combination.

I agree with Bittman's book. It is a great book with simple recipes. I have not made anything from his book that wasn't good.
