Well, I had to suck it up and BUY some dried porcinis last week. Last year was a banner year for chanterelles, but porcinis never came because of the lack of rain, so I couldn't stock up like I normally do. I got a good price on some Grade A from one of our food purveyors, so I'm not crying.
Morel season is around the corner (am I trying to 'wish' Spring into existence here?!), and I'm wondering if any of my Midwest (particularly Michigan) friends are foragers. If so, I'd love to work out a trade...you dry and send me some morels, and I'll send you some porcinis or chanterelles this Autumn.
Darn things used to come up right in our yard under the pine tree. Unfortunately we have a "helpful" neighbor who would sometimes take a few passes with the riding mower at that shaggy patch my husband obviously hadn't had time to get to...
Do morels just give up after awhile? We haven't seen them in a few years.

JB,
Not to my knowledge. It's more likely the weather conditions (temp, amount of rain) haven't been favorable for the last couple of years.
Two years ago you couldn't turn around here without finding porcinis. Last year there were none. We have monsoonal rains here starting in late July, and last year, they just didn't come, so no porcinis. Good year for chanterelles though.
Hopefully, we'll be back in a "normal" pattern this year.
