Another one for fellow gardeners:
I'm having a very poor success rate sprouting thyme (and za'atar) from seed, like 1 in 3 or less. The za'atar seed is fairly expensive, too, so that's kinda problematic.
I'm using the mini peat pots to sprout them, maybe the Ph is wrong? Ideas?

We had the same issue when we tried growing some in the Aerogarden this year. I didn't think anything was harder to sprout than cilantro, but we went zero-for-two with pots of thyme even though the cilantro's doing fine.
At least with thyme you should be able to find some sprouted pots at a garden store. Our outdoor plants came back well this spring so the lack of thyme in the Aerogarden is only a minor issue.

Josh, TJ's has fairly inexpensive pots of thyme, sage and rosemary already grown. We've taken those (and basil) as well and planted them in containers outside with perfect success. They do well in the kitchen window as well as long as I remember to water them . You should be able to get a little pot of growing thyme at any home improvement store now.

Nobody sells starts of Za'atar, which is what I'm really interested in. It's seeds or nothing.

Those minute seeds can be a pain to germinate, as you can't plant them too deep, and the medium often dries out while waiting for the seeds to sprout. So I started some za'atar in my hydroponics, and just scratched it into the surface of the coir mix, and it came up in about 2 weeks. It hasn't grown much, however. I had some even smaller seeded Hoja Santa, which took about a month to come up. Here is a source for plants, for this and many other hard to find herbs, as well as seeds. And check out their listing for thyme - I didn't know there were that many varieties! https://www.richters.com/Web_store/web_ ... 9018.23029

Dave,
Huh, wow.
Yeah, I'm probably planting them too deep.

Could you start it as if you were going for sprouts, that is spread on a damp paper towel and kept moist, or trapped between the side of a jar and some construction paper-just like you grew bean seeds in grade school?

Becky, Yeah, I was thinking that. Not sure it would work though. Pete, Couldn't think of one.
