Paul, I assume that you have read Sweet Maria's recommendations on the Behmor. You should also take a look at Fat Guy's thoughts on eGullet. Link to eGulletIf green beans cost $5 per pound, why am I able to purchase fresh roasted beans for $6.50/pound? Tim

Tim Top quality green beans, sold retail in small quantities cost $5/pound. Your local roaster is buying in bulk and getting a better price. That said, you should consider yourself lucky. Fresh roasted beans here cost $12 for 12 ounces.

Yes, even the bleeding heart, very specialized, non-profit company I buy my beans from will sell for as little as CAD$3.10/lb if you buy a bag (132lb) at a time. I'm sure you could do better.
Around here, an ok local roast will put you back about $15/lb or so; still cheaper then some of the starbucks stuff ($16 & $17/lb), but not cheap. Of course, you probably could get down to $11/lb for some pretty poor stuff.

Well guys, I guess I just have to mention this- My brother's company, New York Gourmet Coffee, just got its website almost together. You can order from online but we don't do credit cards yet, so you get to mail us a check and then we'll ship your order. All,
I buy from Blue Bottle Coffee Company here in SF, and I doubt that I could roast as well as they do. Mind you, their coffee is $12 to $14 for 12oz. However, considering that Blue Bottle is arguably the best coffee I can buy in SF -- a rather coffee-fiendish town -- that's actually rather cheap. Top-grade teas go for up to $60/oz.
I think home coffee roasting is one of those things I'd do once or twice, and then lose interest.
