Starting to plan a hobbit menu for some friends who are equally crazy about all things Middle Earth. Contemplating something with mushrooms or rabbit, but thought I'd ask this (brilliant) community if they had any ideas.

What meal will this be? Breakfast? Second Breakfast? Elevenses?

Semi-seriously, though. Tolkien meant the hobbits to represent the folks of rural England whom he considered to be good-natured, strong-willed, and simple (in the best sense). I don't think you could go wrong with traditional British fare especially if it is hearty, copious, and has a funny name. Bangers and Mash comes to mind. Sadly, most of my books have not made the move across the state with me yet, so I can't look it up, but there is an early scene of the Dwarves eating up large amounts of Bilbo's food. You might look that up for inspiration. The elves also give the travelers some kind of travel cake that is delicious and satisfying. Perhaps Fudge Stripe Cookies? (Little Keebler humor, there.)

Lindsay,

Mushrooms are a must, of course. Also tea.

Beyond that, like JB says, think British. If you can pick up a copy of the book, the meal of the dwarves is described in some detail. We're in Oregon right now, otherwise I'd look in one of our copies.

What ever you do, DON'T look to Denny's for inspiration.

A List of Middle-earth food and drink from Wikipedia.

Our Les Miserables party was a bit easier. Stole a loaf a bread and big box of Kleenex on the way to the show.

Thanks, everyone -- a honey cake (from the Wikipedia site) does seem appropriate and I hadn't thought about potatoes. I do have a copy of the Hobbit as well as the triology as well as the Silmarillion so well check that. I looked at Denny's and thought that was a true travesty.

We went to see the movie last night. I think they must've gone through a ton of sausages in the making of this film. Also, at one point they show a bowl of tomatoes that comes back a few minutes later with the tomatoes roasted whole. I bet that would make an excellent side.
