WTF is "Avocado Hand"?

How on earth are people stabbing themselves prepping an avocado? Do I need to make a video on how to properly process an avocado? Slice, split, pit, scoop, slice dice or mash. There is no point at which the knife comes near your hand.

Can someone explain this to me?

Holding the avocado in one hand while whacking the pit with a knife in the other hand.
(And having really poor aim.)

Linda,

That makes sense. I thought maybe they were trying to cut out the pit with the knife tip or something.

(In >1000 avocados, I've never missed enough to hit my hand. Are people doing this blindfolded?)

That's what happens when you make the guacamole after the margos.

😀

Ok, I'll fess up. Once I had a very ripe avocado and a very sharp knife, and the tip of the knife went through the bottom of the avocado while I was holding it in my palm and slicing it inside the cut half prior to scooping. I didn't cut myself, but I can see how it could happen.

Edit: But the article makes it sound like people are slicing themselves while halving the avocados (in their hand not on a board). Pushing too hard on the knife probably and having it whiz through the pulp once the skin cuts, and not making sure their fingers are somewhere the knife can't go.

Suddenly the Williams Sonoma avocado cutting tool is starting to make sense...
