You don't ban people, you ban behavior. Repeat behavior gets the preventative action.
I've found that strong, good communities don't often have a problem, since trouble tends to get turned off. That is assuming people ignore the trolls and certain OT topics are deleted ruthlessly. I've been doing the BB thing steadily for for about 25 years now, I've see lots explode, but many more endure.

That was kinda the point It doesnt matter who joins, so long as they all behave. On the Internet, no one knows you are dog. Course, you start barking and we'll have to muzzle you

Let's not fear the boogeyman. If we are concerned, set criteria for this board: interest in cooking, willing to share, and advise, must have a (sometimes perverse) sense of humor, etc. I said somewhere here, that if I want the Freeway, and point my car down a not very interesting road, I'll go there. This is fourwheeling. Downshift, hit the throttle, and go up the mountain. This is what I've always said and thought: the fun place to be. There are probably more folks out there who would love to join us, and one or two who'd love to bust up the party. We can sever heads as they are presented.
I'm for whatever you have in mind, Josh.

Been thinkin… Several have voiced in regarding in general a low tolerance for threads that go “off topic” and seem to want a more focused board. What are the majority’s thoughts on this?
It goes without saying that I can get a little “off topic” at times, but to be fair food to me is not only a technical thing, while that element is very important, to me a good rounded culinary experience includes good company, laughter, and in many cases an expression of love, either given or received. When they all come together it is “magic”!
I would rather sit on a log with a slice of cheese, onion, summer sausage and saltines with friends cutting up, joking and laughing, than dining in a five star restaurant with a bunch of humorless prudes. My contribution to or distraction from the board clearly reflects my character, desire, and beliefs…but I am not alone here and have but one voice.
One person on TOBB proudly proclaimed himself as a “Humorless old fossil” Clearly he and I butted heads repeatedly.
Whatch think?

I LIKE that the board goes off topic. It makes it more like a conversation and less like the... well like TOBB. Having to dryly stick to grape peeling techniques would not hold my attention. Mary PS shouldn't this be another thread though

I have no problem at all with off topic. In fact, I think it's what gives a board it's sense of camaraderie, fun and community. We have great people here, and I enjoy the personality they add to threads. If I want dry, only on-topic threads, I can go to eGullet.
