California Dish - What I saw (and Cooked) at the American Culinary Revolution by Jeremiah Tower (copyright 2003) was a gift from another foodie. Unlike some reviewers, I found all of the information about an era that the world will never see again to be fascinating. It offers a glimpse into the incredible amount of work that goes into success at the highest level and the moths that are drawn to that light. No recipes but many mentions of foods that I had to Google as well as people unknown to me. Truly an unbridled romp through sex, drugs, booze, and food at the highest level. Some have accused him of ‘name dropping’ but when you hung out with the people he did it would be difficult not to. I enjoyed it thoroughly, but it’s not for the faint of heart.

Wino,
Actually, the main criticism I saw of the book was that Jeremiah claims invention of many things that he didn't. Mind you, I think I read the reviews in the Chronicle, and Alice Waters is a bit of a cult figure around here.
