Frank,
Let me know how you like it. I have a number of these "food trivia" books, and most of them aren't well-enough researched for me. I'd love to find a good one.

I'm not too sure what constitutes a "good one" of these types of books...I just enjoy the entertainment / useless knowledge aspect of this type of book. It already conflicts the story of beef stroganoff as told to me by a Russian tour guide as we passed the Stroganoff Estate in Russia, she claimed it was developed by the Stroganoff cook because of the Patriarchs' loss of use in one hand and he could not use a knife to cut his meat. The Tarte Tatin story doesn't quite match up with other stories I have heard... Not sure who to believe and I'm not going to spend the time research it to find out...so far I am enjoying it and that is good enough for me...

Frank,
I looked online at the "peek inside" and the book has the same fictional story of Cobb salad as told by several other books. So enjoy it, but don't take it as fact.

I don't know that the actual story was every published anywhere. There are several versions floating about, none of them with any corroboration from the individuals involved (Chuck Wilson, Howard Cobb, etc.). It's not even clear that the salad was invented at the Brown Derby; it may have been invented at a more obscure restaurant and merely popularized at the Derby.

Fuzzy, that is a much more reasonable explanation then I expected. Typically, when I hear "They got it wrong like everyone else" I am presented with an equally unsubstantiated, asserted-truth story that is definitely the "right" one but of course has no more support then any other (or even less). I should have had more faith in you!

Paul,
A depressing amount of recent food history has already degenerated to the point of myth. For example, if anyone manages to definitively identify the "Benedict" eponymized in Eggs Benedict they'll get a master's degree out of it. Distressing considering that the dish is less than 150 years old.
