I am reading a Dance of Dragons which is the 5th book of this series so far. Every book has many references to food and meals etc. It would be interesting to put a meal together based on some of the foods detailed in the books. Here is a link to a site that has some of the items listed.

That sounds like a great dinner party with fellow fans. I think costumes are in order.

The food looks pretty late Medieval/Early Renaissance, but the costumes are all over the map. Everything from Dark Ages Visigoth to High Renaissance Duke. And the women seem to be relegated to strictly fantasy garb (i.e. as little as possible.) I've never seen it. Does the blonde do much fighting in that get-up? I love how costumers are under the impression that only men would want to protect their abdomens from sharp objects.

Wow, there's a tirade for a different board.

Whole thing reminds me that I really want to read those books.

HBO did make this into a series which is based on the first book. It followed the story line pretty well, but they did Hollywoodiz it to a certain extent, costumes for one.

I couldn't read them ... too long, too many characters. It's like reading the entire history of the Wars of the Roses in a 1700-page 3-volume bound edition. Or War and Peace.

Clearly lots of other folks like that kind of writing though. Good for Mr. Martin!

And there are loads of folks working up recipes based on the books. If you knew a Bunch of other fans you could easily plan a themed dinner party.

I am not too big into fantasy but would read the Cliff Notes version in order to secure an invite to the dinner party. Just so I don't have to bare my 50 something midriff.

It appears that at least a few of the ladies don a cotehardie for formal occasions. That's a modest and flattering style.

I had to google that but it should do. My fellow guests would benefit to be sure.

What? Everybody doesn't know the difference between a cotehardie and a houppelande? I used to be a costumer.
