This came in the mail today. (for the proper effect, you need to imagine this being read by a breathless sports announcer. As such, I've added some textual emphasis to give you the idea) Quote: VERTUOLINE! The Future Of Coffee!
This is the First-Ever Nespresso machine designed from the ground up for Lovers Of Both Freshly Brewed Coffee and Authentic Espresso. The CONVENIENCE and CONSISTENCY of the exclusive capsule system Nespresso Pioneered meets all-new Centrifusion(TM) technology for a new level of BREWING INTELLIGENCE on the countertop. Now Every Cup is custom-crafted via an innovative barcode on the capsule. YOU'LL sip truly delicious coffee or espresso every day and enjoy the best of What You Love about each drink.
Methinks someone in the marketing department has been drinking a little too much of the company product, too fast. And yes, really, bar codes. Circular ones. No, of course its not a deterrent to 3rd-party capsules! Whyever would you think that?

That's hilarious. Nespresso's site didn't like my IE version and I couldn't set up my account, so called them to do so. Had the guy on speaker as I was multitasking, and he asked if we had tried the coffee. When I said yes he started asking how I liked the crema, aroma, etc. I finally said "buddy, I just want an account so I can order some coffee and get back to my life." Kids and hubby in the background were cracking up. Interesting that it will make other coffees too, that's the stopping point for Nespresso for many of my friends.

That really is quite breathless, isn't it?
Tassimo has bar codes already, which changes the cycle of the machine. I suspect they (or someone) has a patent. Since bar codes are trivially copied, it would't do much for stopping third parties.

I looked at the new machine and it is the same price we paid for the Lattissima Plus which is still in the return window. However, when I looked at the current coffee offerings, there were not many I'd like. I assume eventually they'll offer all. However, I often use the coffees not in the way they say I should and like them fine. I'd hate to have it restricted. We don't drink regular coffee, so that does not appeal. I thought about hot chocolate, but when I do make it, I don't mind making it on the stove and don't want foam in it.
I don't think they are as nice looking as the Lattissima, but that is just my opinion. FWIW, we are loving our "old" one. Have got my cafe con leche to come out just as I like it and enjoying our cafecitos as well.

Still, the amount of trash generated by using these machines is pretty impressive.

Becky the pods get recycled. Nespresso provides a pre-paid UPS bag to send the empties back. We can also empty the coffee and put them in our local recycling.

We squash our pods and recycle them in our local recycling system, so at least the aluminum is being reused. We bought one order of HiLine pods but they were plastic and not easy to clean/recycle, so we won't be ordering them again.

Wait, the Nespresso pods are aluminum? That can't possibly be good for the flavor of the coffee. Coffee is fairly acidic.

They are. I have to say that was one of my concerns but we are really happy with the quality of the coffee. Even the lighter roasts which could be more impacted by the container are perfect.
I do need to get something reusable for Pilon and Blue Mountain (what a strange combo when written out...).
