Thank you all for your suggestions. It is hard to find very large ones. Saw some very BEAUTIFUL olive wood ones.... but I guess they would not be all that great for grinding. I have a new neighbor from India. She is very sweet and is teaching me a little about spices -- whole new world for me! My family background is Germany and Wales! -- and no one in my family was really into cooking. Thanks again!

Here is a source for some good stone mortars. You can get a good deal by getting on their email list, and occasionally they have a flat rate $5.00 shipping.
