Lynn,

You might want to look at the (LINK HERE) Big Steel Keg. Yes, it is a BGE knock-off that is very well made. Two layers of steel with insulation means the exterior surface remains cool during cooking. If you have a Menard's nearby, it is only $499, that is seriously cheap.

For cold smoking, you need an external heat source and I have found Pepin's idea of a flour pot with chips and an electric bbq starter is excellent. You may use any metal tub to run the cold smoke into your kettle/egg/trash barrel or even cardboard box.

Otherwise, if you want a really cheap smoker, I think that Frank posted instructions on how to make one from a metal bucket & trash can on TOBB.

I'm extremely pleased with my WSM. I am pretty tempted by the pellet smokers for cold smoking, though.

TOBB....the other bulletin board (Cooks) where we all initially met and most drifted away until rescues by the Fuzzy One.

Okay, so I'm a couple years late to this conversation. I really like Tim's BSK but at $799 I may have to forgo the pleasure. I can only shudder at the shipping cost to the Philippines.

For those considering a smoker and wanting to research them and get some expert advice, try: meathead

Deejay Debi's Smoke Pit has a pretty good intro and review of smokers and approaches: DeeJay Debi

My apology for resurrecting such an old thread but I'm hyperactive/impulsive/ADHD when confronted with meat smokers.

I've been eyeing a Masterbuilt one. I'd like more of a set it and forget it approach. Anyone have any experience with these? The Bradley's look interesting just from the chip conveyor belt idea, but many of the parts seem cheap.
